      Totally worth the money.

      I had to use one of these to do surface testing on contents in a building that got vandalized by kids who sprayed acidic fire extinguisher particulates all over the place. I tried pH strips for an initial approach but I don't trust my ability to settle on a pH using those. I used 5 drops of distilled water, a one minute wait time, and this probe, and was able to get fairly stable quantitative readings. The device was pretty easy to calibrate and use. Only thing I would add is that I wish it came with an extra packet of KCL salt so you could make more of your own soaking solution. I'll probably use this for fire remediation-related pH testing too. Also, I'll probably buy a glass probe sensor so I can use it on my aquariums. Totally worth the money.

      This is an excellent value

      I own several PH meters. Some are $200+ refillable lab grade probes. This is an excellent value as it holds its calibration and reads identical to the expensive lab grade probes. Buy one!!!!

      Nifty little package!

      Nifty little package! This is a great value for the money. It comes with a case and calibration kit. This instrument has the highest precision of any portable pH sensor in its price range. It is perfect for taking it in the field. It's small, lightweight, uses common replaceable batteries, it's own case, and a lanyard for when you just carry it in your pocket. I'm thrilled about the two-year warranty and replaceable sensor! Easy to use! Glad Apera makes a wide range of handy products that allow you to only pay for what you need!

      a pocket pH meter that provides high accuracy with portability

      Apera has long been known for excellent laboratory pH instruments, and in this product, they have created a pocket pH meter that provides high accuracy with portability. This version includes a flat sensor that measures the pH on the surface of a porous substance. The accuracy of this kind of measurement is highly dependent upon the coupling, so the stated accuracy is only achievable if the coupling is excellent. This issue is discussed in more detail below. This instrument has some interesting features. My favorite is the three-color backlight which provides feedback on what is being measured and the status of the calibration process. One can do one, two or three point calibration, and pH standards are included for a two-point calibration in the low pH regime (using pH=4 and pH=7 standards). If you want access to high pH values, it is important to do a three point calibration including a pH=10 standard. Such standards are available from Amazon and they are not expensive. I wish Apera had included all three standards in their package, but to be honest, most pH manufacturers don’t include any standards at all so I am not deducting any points over this issue. But be prepared to purchase a pH=10 standard if you plan to work at pH>7.5 with good accuracy (pH=4 and pH=7 standards are adequate for measurements below pH=7.5). I found the temperature compensation of this instrument to be excellent. The issue of coupling was mentioned above, and I close with a brief discussion. The sensor of a pH meter is normally immersed in a solution and thus the sensor is in excellent contact with the solution being measured. The sensor on this instrument is designed to contact a surface but for that to work accurately, the contact must be excellent. I tried using this on paper saturated with a pH 5.2 solution (using a sodium acetate - acetic acid buffer mixture). This solution measured pH=5.2 on the meter when the sensor was immersed into the solution. But when a piece of filter paper was immersed in the solution, and then the instrument was used to measure the pH of the filter paper by placing the sensor on the surface, the readings ranged from 5.2 to 5.4 depending upon how much pressure was applied. This is not surprising nor does it mean there is a flaw in the sensor. It is typical behavior, and the user needs to understand that the stated accuracy of 0.01 pH unit only applies under perfect coupling, and perfect coupling to a surface is nearly impossible unless the surface is very porous and soft so that with modest pressure, the sensor is allowed to insert one mm or so into the surface.

      I recommend this Apera’s pH tester without hesitation.

      The PH60F is Apera Instruments’ Premium PH Pocket Tester. It's a step up from the AI209 which just has an aqueous solution pH testing mode. The PH60F tests aqueous solutions too, but with a flat glass sensor tip that can also be placed directly against non-aqueous flat surfaces, like skin and paper, to obtain PH measurements. There's another optional sensor, available separately, that is spear shaped to use on solid and semisolid surfaces (fruits, cheeses, etc). All tips test with ±0.01 pH Accuracy with the minimum range from -2.00 to 16.00 PH (the flat sensor range is -2.00 to 20.00). The PH60F’s reading compensates for temperature up to 50?C (122°F) with all tips, plus the tips are replaceable. Compared to our other electronic readers, I really like that Apera Instruments testers have large backlit screens making it easier to see both pH and temperature readings without my reading glasses. The auto calibration function and premixed calibrating solutions are big time savers, cutting out prep time and shortening the testing process. Considering my sometimes fumble fingers, the fact that it floats is another big plus. Based on its accuracy, ease of calibration, super quick reading time and convenient case, I recommend this Apera’s pH tester without hesitation.

      I couldn't be more pleased by the brand

      This is now my 4th Apera brand pH tester and I couldn't be more pleased by the brand. Each case contains all the essentials in a solid storage compartment and is of solid quality appropriate for professional measurements/usage. The instructions tend to be the weak point - the company could really use a bit more care in that department but problematic instructions are not limited to this company alone so no deductions...these aren't terrible, just not great. Calibration is a bit of a pain but unlike cheap pH testing equipment, at least possible....and calibration makes all the difference if you want/need reliable results. This version is useful for fabrics, skin and other surface type measurements rather than liquid although it can handle those to some extent.
